A celebrant reading a ceremony with a bride and groom

I often get asked about celebrant-led ceremonies, whether it's for a wedding, a funeral, or a celebration of life. So, I'm putting together some information to help answer those questions and shed some light on the world of celebrant-led occasions.

Yes! I don't charge for online rehearsals. An in-person rehearsal will cost between £50 and £150 depending upon location plus mileage charged at 45p per mile.

Depending upon the timeline, we will meet around six months prior to your wedding day to plan the ceremony. I will start writing the ceremony about four months before and you will receive the first draft around two months before your wedding day. We will publish the final draft four weeks before. If you book me less than six months before your wedding day, we'll adjust the timeline accordingly.

Absolutely! Writing your own vows is one of the most personal and meaningful aspects of a celebrant-led wedding.  I have vow-writing guidance that I share with all of my couples and I can also support you with writing them or write them for you.

You will need to give notice at least 29 days before you want to legally marry one another then return to the register office to carry out the statutory marriage registration. In the presence of a registrar (not a celebrant), you will declare that you are free to marry one another then you will say the legally binding words which make the marriage legal. I have a blog post here which explains this in full.

During our first call, I will ask you to tell me about yourselves and the vision for your wedding ceremony. When you book me, you will share your personal details via the booking form / service agreement. Then, I will get to know you both throughout the process of creating your ceremony. We'll meet in-person and / or online and we will have a WhatsApp group to share information and general wedding chat. You'll be sent a couples bio in which you will tell me all about yourselves and I will use this to help me writing your ceremony. We'll also have a planning meeting in which we will discuss the ceremony structure and logistics.

There are just so many! But the biggest advantage is the freedom and flexibility. You can:

  • Choose the location: Beach, garden, historical building, or anywhere meaningful to you.
  • Choose the time: celebrants can accomodate any time you require.
  • Personalise the content: Include your own vows, readings, music, and rituals.
  • Reflect your beliefs: Whether religious, spiritual, or secular, the ceremony can reflect your personal values.
  • Involve loved ones: You can involve family and friends in unique and meaningful ways.

No.  In England and Wales, a celebrant-led ceremony is not legally binding in itself.  You will still need to have a separate, simple ceremony at a register office to legally register your marriage.  This is usually a short, administrative procedure.

A celebrant-led wedding ceremony is a truly joyous occasion bursting with heartfelt words and love. A ceremony which will have your guests laughing, crying happy tears, applauding and cheering you on. There are no restrictions on content and you have total freedom and creative input; it will be so unique and personal. A celebrant-led wedding ceremony is not a statutory marriage registration - you will need to do that at your local register office prior to your wedding day. Celebrants in England and Wales cannot yet officiate a legally binding marriage.
